The land area which provides water to a particular stream or river is a watershed. Conditions in surface waters reflect what is happening in the surrounding watershed. The quality of the stream and the types of organisms that live in the stream are affected by the surrounding land development, what is carried off these lands into the streams during rainstorms, how much vegetation remains along stream banks, and many other factors. The purer the source waters, the higher the quality of water you will receive at the tap.
